Andalusian Ecovillage in Formation

Periana, Spain

Set within a 240-hectare regenerative landscape in the hills of Málaga, this stay invites you to a vision far larger than accommodation alone. It's an ecovillage in formation, a living landscape where restoration, community, and others ways of living are being shaped at scale and with remarkable dedication, design, and care.

Here, the dramatic slopes, with rocky outcrops, forest edges, wide skies, and endless views form the backdrop of this habitat.
This accommodation it mountain refuge with a soul of its own. The large round yurt, with warm with timber, canvas, and handcrafted detail, lets the surrounding landscape pour in from every angle.

Inside, the high circular ceiling, large windows create a space with the feeling of outside with the comforts of inside, completed with a central wood stove to keep you cozy and warm.

Inside all is present. a sitting area, dining table, and compact kitchenette make it easy to settle in for slow mornings and unhurried evenings, while the mezzanine sleeping spaces are tucked into platform above. The result is both communal and intimate: spacious enough to breathe, yet sheltered enough to feel held by the mountain around you.

It does not get much closer to the GoHabitat ethos than this. A large-scale restoration effort, critically positioned within its wider bioregion, designed with human livelihood and long-term caretaking woven into the equation for generations to come. IkiGaia ecovillage may only just be getting started, yet it already stands out as one of the most holistically articulated interventions grounded in an understanding of the leverage points within both social and ecological systems.

Its 240 hectares sit within a unique humid microclimate shaped by horizontal rain, while still benefiting from sunny exposures, creating highly favourable conditions to strengthen the springs, ponds, holm oak and gall oak forest, rare and endemic birdlife, and unique flora already present on the land. This is not a blank canvas, but a biologically rich heritage territory being carefully re-engaged, protected, and gradually reorganised for greater resilience. Positioned at around 1,100 metres above sea level, such an approach carries far-reaching spillover effects for the biome below, all the way into the valley’s water basin.

Their plans and active lines of work include water retention landscapes for rainwater harvesting, agroforestry systems, food forests, organic and biodynamic gardening, composting, plant-based water purification, passive solar design, solar and water power, solar hot water, and reforestation.

Through the creation of healthy living spaces, the human systems receive just as much care. The project speaks openly about intergenerational community, conflict resolution, non-violent communication, alternative education, holistic health, rural repopulation, and collaborative land tenure that resists speculation and private fragmentation. It imagines clusters of people living, learning, and working together, with children growing up closer to nature and adults relearning how to cooperate in ways that cities and modern economies often fail to support, supported by bioconstruction and natural building.

It is exactly the kind of place GoHabitat was designed for, a place where your stay truly counts.
